What do we mean by ‘church’? (part 1)

A major problem in Christianity today, is that many Christians rely on the ‘church’, church leaders, denominations, doctrines and the like to not only cleanse them but to lead them to salvation.  This idea is against what Jesus (Yeshua) wants from those who follow Him.

  1. A church IS NOT a building

All scripture has its origin in Hebrew and has been seen in some form through Israel.  The word church in the OT is derived from the Hebrew words Qehal or Qahal which means assembly, company, congregation, convocation (Strong’s H6950 and H6951)

and `edah which means congregation or gathering (Strong’s H5712).

The equivalent Greek term used in the NT for assembly or congregation are Ecclesia which means literally “Called out ones” e.g. Acts 19:32 and Synagogue (James 2:2) which means “Together lead” Based on it’s usage we can see that the english word ‘church’ refers to an assembly or congregation of people which have been specifically called to congregate and commune by God ie. it is a spiritual assembly.

This makes sense because the Messiah did not die for a building, He died for those who would belive in Him and thus be free from the curse of sin.  Anyone who relies on being in a physical church for their salvation misunderstands the gift freely given by Elohim in His son Yeshua, we do not need a physical church to ensure that we meet with God.  Yeshua told us Himself :

Matthew 18:19-20 (New King James Version)

19 “Again I say[a] to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered (Together-Led) together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

  1. Matthew 18:19 NU-Text and M-Text read Again, assuredly, I say.

This does not mean that we should not attend church (a physical building) as it is important to have somewhere were believers can feel comfortable and safe to gather and worship God, but it is our human presence which makes ‘church’ not a building with man-made walls.
